Detach all peripherals-

In case, if no external device has been the root cause and your Mac still won't boot, then you have to dig a bit deeper to know the cause.
Performing a Safe Boot-
Safe Boot lets your Mac to boot up with minimum amount of drivers required to make it work, simultaneously it checks your hard disk in the process. For doing this, start up your computer while holding Shift key until the Apple logo appears. If it doesn't start normally then give a closer look to hard drive.
If you cannot boot up Mac OS X normally, then run Disk Utility and check out the hard drive-
- Boot up your computer while holding down Command+R. This will boot the Mac into diagnostic mode.
- Choose the Disk Utility option.
- Select the hard drive and click Verify. Wait till the Disk utility finish running.
- Click Repairs if issues pop up.
- Click Repair Permissions if nothing pops up and wait for Disk Utility to examine or review your hard drive again.
- Go ahead and reboot if Disk Utility finds and repairs some issue.
